Daniel Craig Film Knives Out

We don’t typically write about Hollywood paydays at /Film unless they’re especially huge, but a new report brings word of three new instances which absolutely fit that description. Writer/director Rian Johnson, producer Ram Bergman, and star Daniel Craig are all poised to make $100 million each thanks to the surprising Knives Out sequels deal that Netflix made last week. The deal itself was worth $469 million, but the fact that these three players will receive $100 million each puts them in rarified air in Hollywood history. That’s Robert-Downey-Jr-Avengers-level money.

According to a new piece in THR, “The pact gave Johnson immense creative control, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter. He doesn’t have to take notes from the streamer. The only contingencies were that Craig must star in the sequels and that each must have at least the budget of the 2019 movie, which was in the $40 million range. Sources say that Johnson, Bergman and Craig stand to walk away with upwards of $100 million each.”

In the Knives Out film the Daniel Craig scenes are pure magic. Watch the new movie Knives Out streaming now on Prime Video. About Prime Video:Want to watch. If you think Daniel Craig is having a hard time now that his reign as James Bond is coming to an end, you might wanna check again, as he has now Daniel Craig is about to make $100 million in the next ‘Knives Out’ films - Flipboard. In 2019, Craig starred in Rian Johnson 's black comedy murder-mystery Knives Out, as a detective investigating the sudden death of a family patriarch. The film premiered at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival to critical acclaim, and was theatrically released that November.

Again, that is a lot of money. Downey is the only person I can think of who’s in in the same stratosphere. For Avengers: Endgame, he’s rumored to have made around $75 million when you factor in his lucrative back-end profit participation deal.

If you’ll allow me to concern-troll for a moment: when you make that much money, you run the risk of becoming disconnected with reality to a degree and either being unwilling, unable, or uninterested in taking notes and advice from anyone when it comes to creative decision-making on future projects. That may sound great on paper, but it’s also probably how things like Dolittle end up happening. There is something to be said for the idea of compromises and restrictions being essential to creating the most interesting version of a film. But Johnson knows this, and he’s one of the most humble and hardworking people in the industry. I fully trust his creative instincts and have no doubt that these sequels will end up being great.

The THR piece mentions that in January, “with the pandemic in full swing,” Johnson and Bergman (who own the rights to Knives Out) “questioned the near-term viability of theatrical releasing” and decided to go out to streamers for the sequels, and a bidding war erupted, with Netflix coming out victorious. There may be some grumbling about this deal being a big blow to theatrical moviegoing, but considering the circumstances around which this decision was made (remember, it was long before the vaccine rollout was as effective as it has since become), it’s tough to blame Johnson and Bergman for doing what they had to do in order to guarantee that these sequels could get made.

Netflix is close to finalizing a massive $400 million deal for Knives Out 2, with director Rian Johnson and Daniel Craig both expected to return. Netflix, Apple, Amazon, and more were all in the midst of a bidding war for the sequel, with Netflix likely to come out ahead. The deal will enable Netflix to potentially turn Knives Out into a full-blown franchise, and alternate reports indicate the streaming service has ordered both Knives Out 2 and Knives Out 3. Filming on the sequel is expected to start this summer, with casting beginning ASAP.

Deadline broke the news that Knives Out 2 is likely headed to Netflix via an eye-popping $400 million deal. Variety actually says it might even be higher, at $450 million, and adds that Netflix is buying both Knives Out 2 and Knives Out 3. That might sound like a lot for Knives Out, especially since the original movie only cost about $40 million to make. But director Rian Johnson and producer Ram Bergman own and license the rights to the original movie, which means they were able to “make the richest sequel deal they could.” A secretive bidding war ensued, with Netflix, Amazon, Apple, and others all vying to score the rights. In the end, it looks like Netflix will win out. Casting on the sequel is expected to begin “immediately,” and filming is expected to start on June 28 in Greece.

Plot details aren’t available at this moment, and it looks like the only cast member returning from the star-studded original is Daniel Craig as private detective Benoit Blanc. That makes sense – Blanc is meant to be a Poirot-like character who goes from mystery to mystery, so while it would be nice to see Ana de Armas back again, I understand why she’s unlikely to return. The fact that the film is shooting in Greece suggests that Blanc will end up investigating a mystery overseas, but that’s just speculation on my part. “This’ll be another Poirot novel,” Johnson said of the potential sequel in the past. “This’ll be just like what Agatha Christie did. It’s disconnected from Knives Out. It’s just another case.”

In the original film, Blanc was investigating the death of a famed mystery novelist. The eccentric members of the dead novelist’s family were all suspects, as was his nurse, played by de Armas. It was a funny, twisty, wildly entertaining movie, and I’m excited to see what Johnson does with the material now. It’s all but certain that Johnson will assemble a new star-studded cast for Blanc to investigate. And the fact that there’s already a third film in consideration indicates we’re getting a full-blown Benoit Blanc Netflix franchise, and I for one am here for it.
